The West Fjords of Iceland are dotted with small fishing towns. Yet these towns seem to do very little actual fishing since the mid seventies when a quota system was enacted as a response to an overfishing crisis. While it has been successful in allowing the population of herring around Iceland to rebound, it has had other effects as well. A fisherman stepping off a small private boat in the village of Þingeyri said this year he had met his quota in a mere 5 days. Consequently, there is a lot of fishing equipment lying around and it is surprisingly difficult to get fresh fish in any of these towns (unless of coarse you have a boat and do it yourself). The law is apparently not strict about fishing for personal consumption.

Below are a couple of images of all this gear in the harbors of some of these towns with more to follow in the next few days.

I had the need for a single red plastic sand bucket as a prop a while back and found that it was a bit difficult to find in the winter in NY. So a quick search of the ol’ interweb brought me 12 plastic pails just in time for the shoot. Well, what do you do with 12 plastic pails once they’ve served their purpose as a prop (aside from recycle them or try to pawn them off on your friends’ children)? Make something bright and vacuous!

You won’t often find me leaning over to take photographs of flowers, small animals or other such things, but here are a few images from a short series I was working on for a little while called Flowers at the Hotel Delmano. Each time I’d pass it seemed there was a new bouquet in the window and each time the light and scene outside made the same window unique.

On a related note, like past years, I’ll be donating a print to the Ah Haa school in Telluride for their annual fundraising auction. I was thinking about sending one of these (probably the second or last one) mostly because I really want an excuse to print one of these and see how it comes out. I have to decide and send them a jpg of the image, whatever it maybe, on Monday, so I’ve got the weekend to mull it over.
